Already they have experienced in Maryland, Kentucky and 3lissouri, a little of the vengeance that awaits them .should they sufi'er themselves to be subdued.” He, perhaps unintentionally, gives a clever name to the people who brought on this war:— ‘Mohn, you know as well as I do, upon what platform and what principles President Lincoln was elected; and it was his election that brought on this unlucky war. I have no doubt but they would have eventually separated, but it would have been deferred for years had there been more love for the I nion and the Con.stitution, and less talk about slavery,—that hated and baneful sub ject, made so not by slaveholders, but by those bigoted enthusia8s(’.s-, such as Sumner, Wilson i Co., who wrought the people of the North (who swallowed every word they said,) to such a high state excitement as ended in his election and final dissolution of the Union.” A I\ew Law Book. Great destruction I was everywhere caused, and many lives lost. In I the islands, however, the effect of these natural : phenomena were most marked. On the island I of Nias a military post was completely swept awaj by the sea, and several of the garrisons destroyed. A gunboat lying in the harbour was torn from her anchors and thrown high upon the shore. (Ja the island of Simo almost the whole of the houses were destroyed, and, out of a population of about eleven hundred, nearly eight hundred i perished. Unusually heavy rains also prevailed ! in other parts ot the dependencies. In Banda ! the nutmeg crops suffered much injury from this ^ cause. A fearful eruption of the volcano on the ! island of 31akijau, about thirty-five^English miles from Ternate, had caused the loss of many hun dreds of lives and destroyed the whole vegetation. Plujue i)i Colorado Territory.—One of the terrible plagues of Egypt now threatens Colorado. The grasshoppers are making their appearance in inn-amerable numbers. Last year they were a source of great annoyance to our farmers, but this season there are grounds for serious apprehension. Already they have commenced their devastating attacks on vegetation. Although now not larger than grains of wheat, they have generated in such vast numbers that they sweep from gardens and tields the tender vegetation like scourging flame. Colorado Ji^publican,. Rich Mormon Lady.—One of the women belonging to the last company of Mormon Saints, who passed through here yesterday, bound for Salt Lake, had ninety-seven thousand solid rea sons why she ought not to have gone thither. In i other words, she had, in a little iron-bound chest, j ninety-seven thou.sand dollars in gold. With an ! amount of worldly prudence, which we should ' not have ex.pected to find in a Saint, but which ! showed that she had learned the necessity of be- I ing as wise as a serpent and harmless as a dove, : she entrusted the money to the Express Company, ’ who transferred it for her.
